REVAL TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE MEETING A SURPRISE?

Why was this important meeting about choosing a revaluation firm such a surprise?

Did you know there was a special Township Committee meeting Wednesday night on the revaluation? Well, there was, but word seemed to have gotten out a little late.

Yes, we assume all legal notifications were done. Township Clerk Liz Fritzen is nothing if not law-abiding and on top of these things. Tops in her field. A check of The Star-Ledger finds it ran a public notice Tuesday, within the 24-hour legal requirement. But the notice was hidden in its lengthy list of notices on page 62 where few people usually look. And just a day ahead.

And the agenda (below) was not found on the township's main web page, stuck inside along with the list of agendas for TC meetings.

At the meeting, TC members were to question two firms who bid to run the revaluation set for next year. There also was a public comment portion. It would have been nice to attend. The meeting also was not on television, likely due to its late notice.

With such an important issue, it should have been better promoted so residents could be there to ask questions, too. Not a great way to start off the sensitive issue of revaluation. The proposed revaluation ad hoc committee has not even been formed yet.

We have sought comment form TC members. Fred Profeta said after the meeting no choice had been made, e-mailing that "We have another firm to interview on 9/1.  I don't know about the timing, but have no reason to suspect shenanigans.  Sometimes things just don't get done."

TC Member Jerry Ryan also responded, stating: "The meeting that we held last night has been on the docket for weeks. It was mentioned at the last several township committee meetings, including the last one.  The meeting was not on TV because we always conduct interviews like this while sitting at a conference table talking with people: its easier to work an interview that way. The press was there, nothing was hidden. It was not a surprise."

Mayor Vic De Luca did not respond to a request for comment.

Hope the rush, considering the Aug. 18 meeting was cancelled, was for a good reason. Hey, if it has any impact on keeping property taxes down, bravo. But I doubt it.
