PRESENTING THE MAPLEWOODIAN INTERVIEW

Mayor Vic De Luca kicks off our newest feature. The "Maplewoodian Interview" hopes to give you some insight into township notables and their views - in a fun way about town.
See his answers to our special list of questions.

deluca.gifHOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MAPLEWOOD?

15 years

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT OUR TOWN?

People - We have a great mix of folks in town and it is fun being around them. They are willing to pitch in and make the community the best it can be. I like that so many people care.

WHAT IS THE WORST?

Property taxes - I hear the pain from folks who are making tough choices about whether or not they can stay here. I am hopeful that eventually the tax system will be changed by the state legislature so that we can get some relief. In the meantime, we are balancing the need to be fiscally smart with delivering basic town services.

WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

The Wrecking Crew - How Conservatives Rule by Thomas Frank, author of What's the Matter With Kansas

WHAT IS YOR FAVORITE FOOD?

Anything other than tomato soup and mac & cheese.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DRINK?

 Margarita

WHO WOULD YOU WANT IN A FOXHOLE WITH YOU?

My wife Janey - she always has my back

WHAT ITEM DO YOU OWN YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

My "crackberry" - it keeps me in constant contact with the Maplewoodian

FAVORITE MOVIE?

Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty and Julie Andrews (1978)

FAVORITE TV SHOW?

 Burn Notice

PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

YANKEES OR METS?

 Mets

JETS OR GIANTS?

Giants

AMERICAN IDOL OR DANCING WITH THE STARS?

American Idol

MAPLEWOOD VILLAGE OR SPRINGFIELD AVE.?

Good try! I use both of our shopping districts to keep my dollars in Maplewood. There are things I can get on Springfield Avenue that I cannot get in Maplewood Village and vice versa.  Don't forget Irvington Avenue where you can get a wide variety of ethnic foods at the Extra Supermarket.

MAIN BRANCH OR HILTON?

I use and support both. I just read a story to children during the 50th anniversary of the Hilton branch, which was once above the firestation on Boyden Avenue.

MEMORIAL PARK OR MAPLECREST?

Memorial Park

MAPLE LEAF OR PARK WOOD?

Parkwood get the nod since I worked with Pete when he first came into town. I do have early morning meetings at both diners. And I have gotten the famous Jersey sandwich - pork roll and cheese - in all three diners in town.

JULY 4TH OR MEMORIAL DAY?

July 4th - watching Jerry Ryan in the races was the highlight

ST. JAMES GATE OR O'REILLYS PUB?

I play basketball in the over 35 league on a team sponsored by O'Reillys so it gets my pick.

WALK TO THE TRAIN OR JITNEY?

 Jitney

ARTIFICIAL TURF OR REAL GRASS?

real grass (I assume you are talking about a field and not something you roll in paper.)

MORROW TURNOVER SALE OR PROSPECT RUMMAGE SALE?

pass - can't afford to piss off the congregations

VILLAGE TRATTORIA OR ROMAN GOURMET?

You can find me in Roman Gourmet before most Township Committee meetings wolfing down two slices and a medium coke. You can also find my wife and I at Village Trattoria having a great Italian dinner. Both rate in my book.

And can you name the six pizza places in town? How about the four chinese takeout restaurants?

BURGDORFF CENTER OR WOMEN'S CLUB?

Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts - We fixed up the entrance way and next will be the theater.
